Joyce Bolaños

Joyce Bolaños was born in Peru and began her immigrant journey as a child when her family relocated to St. Croix and later to Puerto Rico in search of economic stability. From an early age, she navigated new languages, cultures, and questions of identity and belonging. As a student in San Juan, she became a member of the Puerto Rican National Fencing Team, where she experienced both athletic success and the challenges of being seen as an outsider despite her achievements.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Marketing from Universidad Interamericana and went on to hold executive leadership roles in the hospitality and luxury retail industry, including serving as General Manager for Louis Vuitton in St. Thomas.

After relocating to Connecticut in 2000, Joyce founded Viva Hartford, producing award-winning bilingual television programming that elevated Latino culture, arts, and community voices. Her work earned the Governor’s Award in Film and Culture in 2008 and brought greater visibility to artists, entrepreneurs, and community issues across the region.

Today, Joyce serves as a faculty member at Suffield Academy, where she promotes language learning, cultural exchange, and global awareness among students. She is also an international fencing leader, serving in roles within the International Fencing Federation (FIE), organizing major competitions, and earning recognition as a Pan American Veteran medalist.

Her cultural leadership extends into the community through initiatives such as Art Squash Enfield, which has helped spark local arts engagement and strengthen community connections. Through her work, she has partnered with organizations including the Hartford History Center, the University of Hartford Women’s Business Center, and Girls for Technology to support entrepreneurship, highlight women leaders, and promote cultural understanding.

Joyce Bolaños’s work bridges education, media, sport, and the arts. Her lifelong commitment to cultural expression, leadership, and community engagement continues to strengthen Connecticut’s cultural vitality and global connections.
