Connecticut Attorney General William Tong
The Honorable William Tong is the 25th Attorney General of Connecticut, first elected in 2019 and currently serving his second term. A national leader in complex, multistate litigation, he has been at the forefront of efforts to hold powerful industries accountable, protect consumers, and defend civil rights and freedoms.
Attorney General Tong has played a critical role in defending the constitutional principle of birthright citizenship, standing with attorneys general across the nation to protect the rights guaranteed under the 14th Amendment. His leadership in these efforts reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that fundamental protections under the Constitution are preserved for all, particularly for immigrant communities.
Throughout his tenure, he has led bipartisan investigations and lawsuits addressing the opioid crisis, price-fixing in the generic drug industry, and the impact of social media on young people. He has also taken action to combat robocall scams, safeguard personal data, and protect consumers’ rights in an evolving digital economy. In Connecticut, he has prioritized lowering energy costs, expanding broadband access, and protecting access to affordable healthcare.
A strong defender of civil rights, Attorney General Tong has worked to protect women, minority communities, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ individuals. He has defended Connecticut’s gun safety laws, challenged corporate misconduct related to climate change, and helped resolve longstanding legal cases to expand educational opportunities and improve outcomes for vulnerable children.
Before serving as Attorney General, Tong was a litigator for 18 years and served 12 years in the Connecticut General Assembly, where he chaired the Judiciary and Banking Committees. In 2006, he became the first Asian American elected to state office in Connecticut history, and he is the first Chinese American elected Attorney General in the United States.
The son of immigrant small business owners, Attorney General Tong grew up working in his family’s restaurant in the Hartford area. His life and career reflect a deep commitment to justice, opportunity, and public service. He lives in Stamford with his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children.
